I’ve been playing with some Alembic video capture assets (people). It works well for a few instances but performance degrads very very quickly. I wonder if anyone knows shortcuts for Alembic assets. I know you can’t “paint them” into a crowd because they are not meshes or be converted to actors. As an example, I was able to bring the asset into Maya, make it into a vRay or Arnold proxy, and render 500 instances of the asset. I am aware that it is pointless to try to create many instances for real-time purposes, but even if I wanted to use UE to render cinematics, I am not aware of a way of instancing alembic caches and duplicating / offsetting assets seem to reach a limit very quickly.
