This week on Inside Unreal, our guests Ivan Ilko, a freelance artist and designer, and Mai Ao, a technical artist from SideFX Houdini will talk about their collaboration on a photogrammetry-scanning project about recreating Ukrainian heritage sites in Unreal Engine. They will also demonstrate some of the Houdini tools created along the way for the high-res geometry processing!

WHO
Ivan Ilko is a concept artist, architectural designer, environment artist, and lighter. He has a master’s degree in Architecture from National Academy of Fine Art and Architecture in Kyiv, Ukraine, and a master’s degree in Visual Game and Media Design from Royal Danish Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ivan is very passionate about building virtual worlds as well as the preservation of cultural heritage. For the past few years, using the latest photogrammetry and laser scanning technologies, he was working on recreating Ukrainian historical sites in virtual space, and experimenting with new ways to bring together history, gaming, and education.
Mai Ao (He/Him) - SideFX Lead Technical Artist - @aomai01
Mai Ao is the lead technical artist at SideFX Labs. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, he received an education in computer graphics, visual art, and project management. He worked in real-time productions on projects with Industrial Light & Magic and Walt Disney Imagineering, responsible for Houdini pipelines, FX, shaders, and performance optimization. At SideFX, Mai is invested in serving the community and doing what he can to help push the boundaries of real-time technologies. He is mostly a nice guy, and his friends’ cats tend to like him, if that’s any indication.
