Indie team looking for an Environment Artist - FX Artist (UE4) and a Character Designer - Animator

Project Title:
Hunting Grounds Of The Great Spirit

Hello there! We are a small group of indie game developers, mostly based in France. We are working on an exploration/adventure game based on Native American cultures and spiritualities, graphicaly realistic.

We are now looking for two profiles :

  • An UE4 Environment Artist - FX Artist
  • A Character Designer - Animator

The video game Hunting Grounds Of The Great Spirit is first and foremost a solo exploration-adventure game (but not only that) currently in production, playable in the first person view in vast natural and dreamlike environments, in “open worlds”. Many main quests and secondary quests will have to be completed, they will require a sense of observation and deduction. There will also be traditional Native American hunting (with bow, spear, etc.), craft, and… A certain survival layer, this punctually.

The player is a special agent of B.I.A. (Bureau of Indian Affairs, which is close to be the only federal agency in the United States with the authority to investigate in American Indian reservations), fresh from his training, who is investigating with his partner in a Native American reservation on mysterious disappearances and deaths of Native Americans Chiefs. Shortly after starting his investigation, he falls into a coma… And “wakes up” in a strange and dreamlike environment, in nature. He will soon learn that he is in a spiritual world peculiar to Natives in North American, the Hunting Grounds of the Great Spirit, where the rules of the “real” world do not always apply…

The player will have to accomplish a spiritual journey throughout the game. The main and ultimate goal is to reach the end of this journey, which will not be easy. Once this is done, the player can choose between different possible ends. There will also be secondary and optional goals, one of them (the hardest to reach) will unlock another end to the game, probably the “best”.

In order to continue his spiritual journey, the player will have to hunt specific preys in order to make offerings to totem animals, which will allow him to continue his journey. There will also be collectibles more or less difficult to find, which may possibly have a relationship with the real world, which will allow the character to have flashbacks about the investigation he was leading before falling in a coma, and thus understand how he got there. This will also allow him to remember the clues and evidences he has accumulated in the real world that have allowed him to unmask the perpetrator(s) of the mysterious disappearances and deaths… So there will be, from time to time, like a red thread, a relationship between the real world and the spiritual world.

Team Structure:
1 Project Manager & Writer/GameDesigner/LevelDesigner (he can make coffee too! ^^), with +15 years XP
1 3D Environment Artist/FX Artist, position to be filled.
2 3D Artists/Animators, with 1 position to be filled.
1 2D Artist/Concept Artist.
3 UE4 Coders.
1 Sound Designer/Music Composer, with +20 years XP.

Talents Required:

General requirements:
You need the following general requirements for the position to join our team:

  • Passion for games and creating them.
  • An insatiable thirst for knowledge.
  • Having time to work on the project - at the very least 10 hours per week.
  • Long-term interest and availability.
  • You must be at least 18 years old (a contract based on revenue shared will be signed).
  • Ability to communicate in English (or even better in French).

Environment Artist - FX Artist:
We are looking for someone who will be in charge of creating environments of the game, from level design documents, while bringing his/her own artistic touch. Environments to create are diverse in nature (plains, deserts, swamps, forests, rocky mountains, etc.) in a context of “big but achievable" open worlds. It’s a critical position within the team which needs polyvalency.

  • Ability to work with teammates such as Game Designer, Programmer, Animators, Sound Designer, etc. is required
  • A taste for Adventure games and/or open worlds is highly valued.
  • Experience with UE4 Terrain Editor is required.
  • Experience with Zbrush.
  • Experience with Maya or 3DS Max.
  • Experience with Substance a bonus.
  • Experience with UE4 toolset a bonus.
  • Experience with Speedtree a bonus.
  • Experience with FX creation and/or shaders for UE4 projects a plus.
  • Expected to create additional props.

Character Designer - Animator:
We are looking for someone who will be in charge of creating realistic characters and animals, then will animate them. environments of the game. It’s a critical position within the team which needs polyvalency.

  • Experience with Maya or 3DS Max required.
  • Experience with UE4 toolset a bonus.
  • Expected to create, rig and animate player, npcs & monsters.
  • Expected to create additional props.
