Hi everyone!
I’m a beginner. I just finished the first tutorial on UE 5.8 buttons. It was incredibly interesting. But once it’s over, I’m left feeling like I’m back at square one.
There are millions of resources out there—on the web, YouTube, and forums. There are countless opinions on how and where to start, and thousands of texts from talented people that need to be deciphered—even right here on this forum. It’s a challenge to find the right teaching style, the right content, and so on.
OneDrive doesn’t work for me, so simply launching the tutorials from within the program is difficult. Googling and consulting AI doesn’t solve the problem either.
I know I can be lazy at times, but when you’re facing the vast ocean of the internet—and you’re not stupid, and time is precious—you suddenly realize something is missing.
There are wonderful examples of work by incredibly talented people, ranging from games to presentations. But as a beginner—even a genius—how do you reverse-engineer these things when your head is full of 1,001 project ideas but you lack the knowledge or understanding of the basics?
Then, an idea occurred to me.
When creating a new project, the engine offers four domains—four directions. We all know them. The idea is to embed a tutorial series for each direction (domain) directly into the engine itself. These would cover the absolute basics for each area, featuring interactive elements—like the initial button tutorial—structured as quests.
Take the “Film” section, for example: it would cover fundamental concepts a beginner wouldn’t know—sets, staging, camera angles, lighting, exposure. Through a series of interactive quests, the beginner would follow a learning path known to most professionals, but experience it directly within the engine. Essentially, each of the four directions would have a carefully curated, foundational series of lessons built right into the engine.
By completing such a mini-series within the engine, a beginner—in addition to mastering the engine’s tools—will gain a practical understanding of the fundamentals specific to the domain; consequently, their questions (or mine) on forums or when searching for courses and tutorials will be well-informed and specific.
What do you think?
We are talking about the most basic concepts for each of the areas (domains) within the engine itself, built in with sets of basic elements for each.
Epic Games has created an incredible engine, but for a beginner, it is like stepping out into an open ocean with no buoys, patrol boats, or maps.
…This is The Way!
