Implementing a detailed Oil Painting art style into an open world 3D game

Hello All

I am looking to make a single level of a 3D open world video game, as a proof of concept, with an art style like a digital oil painting. An exact image of what I wish to recreate can be found here. I have gotten so far as to plan out using Blender Grease Pencil, but then what about shadows and highlights when I import to unreal? I have poured a lot of time into trying to figure it out and fear I am getting aimless, would anyone be able to provide a detailed workflow that I could use? I would be eternally grateful. The only similar game I’ve seen with this type if effect is called 11:11 Memories Retold but I want to make something similar in unreal and make it more detailed but still clearly painterly.

Hey there @Drome090! Welcome back to the community! So this effect is a bit of a tough one to pull off with accuracy, much of the time you see this done in games (even the one you mentioned) as a post processing effect and using a mostly standard workflow otherwise.

This is a bit of an older video and shows off a basic painterly post process material, but it would need some tweaking to resemble what you’re going for.

Thank you immensely. I will incorporate this into my game document and research everything I can about this method. That is quite similar to what I’m going for.
