Images seem to have plenty of overlap, but don't align well at all. What am I missing?

Howdy folks, I’ve been working to make a 3D model of an area out in Kentucky, and have been really struggling to create a successful 3D model. The mission was flown at 80% side/forward overlap at about 200 feet or so, but when I put it into Reality Capture, I was only able to get 50 or so of those images to align with default settings. I’ve never seen such a low alignment amount, but when I looked at the photos themselves, they seemed fine and there seemed to be plenty of overlap between images. After messing around with alignment settings some more, I was able to get 350 of the images to align, but the rest broke up into tiny components of 2 images, or didn’t register with any other photos at all. Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening?

Here’s the alignment settings I’m using:

Here’s my “most successful” alignment:

Notice how the images are twisted and pointed at the sky at certain points. All of those images were captured pointing straight down, so this is very strange. I’m really just very confused at why this capture is aligning so poorly. Normally I can look at this stuff and say “oh yeah, that’s what’s making this not work” but I really can’t with this one. Anyone have an idea about what I might be missing here? Thanks!

Hi Lincoln_RG,
this is quite strange issue.
Firstly, can you try Make it like a clean install (open RC with pushed SHIFT and then choose the option Make it like a clean install).
The original settings should be sufficient for most datasets. Are all your images georeferenced? Have you used one drone for capturing? What coordinate system do you have set as Project CS? After image import are the images on the correct position in the Map view?

Hi OndrejTrhan, thanks for replying. The images are all georeferenced, and it’s all captured using one drone (a Skydio 2). The coordinate system is now set to “Local1: Euclidean” (after resetting the settings, I’m not sure what it was set to before). Aligning with default settings, it did worse ):

When I look at the map view, the images are in the correct position. This is one of the larger components I was able to make from the latest alignment.

These flights were a “Skydio GPS scan” that does a grid pattern over an area. Of the three or so flights that have used this capture method, I’ve run into these issues every time. However, when the drone is flown manually, I don’t seem to have these issues when creating a 3D mesh. What do you think could be causing that issue?

Hi, this seems like you were capturing a forest area, which could be problematic for the alignment. In this case could be helpful to take images from higher height.
Also, as the images are georeferenced, you can set the project coordinate system to WGS84 and set higher pose accuracy. You can set it in 1Ds view when you will have selected iamges:
image
Or in the alignment settings under Alignment tab/Registration/Settings/ Camera prior settings
Also, in Advanced alignment settings you can use option Merge georeferenced components
