I'm a solo dev new to Unreal

Hello! I’m a solo dev who’s primarily worked in Unity up until this point. I have two years of experience in Unity and now I’m switching to Unreal because it is the game engine that my course curriculum requires.

My question is this, should I have any reservations about switching to Unreal? Will I be missing out on anything if I leave Unity behind? If anybody could give me a rundown on what I could expect, it would be immensely helpful. Thank you!

Hi Vealshell,

In my mind, one of the major distinctions between UE and Unity, is that UE comes with many systems built in. (Material graph for one example) Whereas you’d find/add plugins for features in Unity.

Take a look at this doc which compares some terminology/features between the two engines.

Welcome to Unreal.

if you’ve gotten used to unreal then switch to unity, the first thing you’ll notice is that you have to do hundreds or thousands of hours more worth of work to get to the same starting point.

the old general wisdom was that unity is for beginners and unreal is for geniuses, but I think thats outdated like ten years - unreal is now much easier for the beginner thanks for blueprint, tons of built in ready-for-production tools, and a stable editor.

Unity is still top choice for phone games but it looks like most studios who used to use it for 3d games are moving to unreal.

it would be good for unreal to have stiffer competition in 3d games space I suppose but at least for now it doesn’t seem like epic is resting on their laurels - actually editor is updated so fast it’s hard to keep up with new toys. As a solo-dev I find that I have to be pretty disciplined to ignore new things and just stick with what I know until project is complete.
