I’m looking to create a few animated short films to post to YouTube when I’m done. Would the legal guidelines be the same as releasing a video game, or are there different guidelines? I would just like to make sure I’m doing everything legally while creating and posting the Unreal Engine animated shorts.
Hey there @CFulster! Welcome to the community! So here’s the EULA that covers most of what you need to know. One of the more important parts to you might be the royalty clause. For animations that don’t distribute the engine at all you don’t pay royalties (with some caveats). I do however recommend reading the entire EULA however as it has more information especially for non-game projects.
3a:
i. Non-Engine Products (e.g., Rendered Video Files)
You will not owe us any royalty payments for Distributing Products that (i) do not include any Engine Code, (ii) do not require any Engine Code to run and (iii) do not include Starter Content in source format (“Non-Engine Products”) to any person or entity.
