Hi all,
I think everyone has noticed that games and even demo are getting extremely big.
There are games that are like 30, 50 or even 150 GB in size…
Future games are only to get bigger and bigger, because 90% of all games is content, 3d-models and textures are the biggest part of it.
Believe it or not, but not all of us are on internet plans that allow us to download 1000’s of GB a month… Even in rich countries there are people that rather spend their money on more essential things, so not having to spend all their download on 1 game is very much appreciated.
So my idea is: Create a Universal resource pool and download it once ( in theory, some assets can be updated and versioned, like windows and its DLL’s).
Each game will need to know the path to that Pool ( easier to do on consoles? ).
Then it can link to a resource inside of that pool and use it inside of the game.
Things that have to be in it are all of the Megascans ( we all have them already…).
Each game will have its own content of course, that will be stored in it own folders, I am talking about content that can be shared; models and textures that Epic already offers for free.
I strongly believe that Epic has to be the one to push this idea forwards and discuss it with its clients. It is crazy to think, that in 10 games, there will be the same rockface, with a billion polygons and 8K textures. And you drive/fly by it at 300 km/h. It was on screen for 3 seconds, but it did cost 1 GB to download it… Times 10…
I think it should be possible to implement such a thing, you geniuses created an engine that does Global illumination and renders billions of polygons in real-time. Sure this is an easy thing to do
