Look at this asset. The seller is a popular asset dev on other platforms. But here he is given a 1 star review. And all because the asset was not available to the user paid for it. This is most likely an issue on Epic’s side or an error on the user’s part.
Unity has a way to handle such a situation. They don’t show the rating average on the asset unless there a minimum number of ratings on the asset. The individual reviews & ratings by users should still be shown on the reviews tab, but when the asset appears in search or the asset page, the rating average shouldn’t be shown unless there a minimum amount of ratings say 3 or 4 or 5.
I agree that this should be improved.
Hiding the ratings up to a minimum isn’t ideal because a few good ratings are desired to build trust with potential buyers.
Currently ratings are unreliable:
If the rating does not match the quality of the product or service.
If ratings aren’t explained at all with commentary and public user support.
If the rating was posted after minimal usage of the product.
If the rating was posted directly after buying the product (if owned at all).
If the rating was posted by someone who lacks basic developer knowledge.
If the product was free for a limited time, since this invites bot accounts.
It could use a trust level system, since people rating could be anyone from people with good intentions and honest reviews to bots and competitors.
