I’m trying to get a character into UE4 just to trial run for the future, I plan to make many characters so I need to know the process. Except, I’ve run into major issues doing so.
Here’s my character, with his skeleton visible. I’ve made him in Blender and he is in many different pieces. I have his limbs, head and torso weight painted but a few small details aren’t. When exporting, I combine him into one piece. I can pose him by moving his bones, but he has no “controls”, I’ll just say I have no idea what those are for or how to get them. I’m assuming they’re for ease of animating but might not matter for retargeting, which is all I’m trying to do right now. I’ve attached the hierarchy of his bones as images, as I’ve seen messing up there can cause big issues.
I’ve tried exporting him with his skeleton into UE4, which yields seemingly good results. I can look at his skeleton in the editor, pose it and watch him deform, his size is good in the world. But if I try to retarget an animation to him, he stretches out to infinity like this, or the engine crashes (this is previewing a retargeted animation)
.
I’ve found something else odd, when I select bones in the engine, their names are “off” compared to Blender. As you can see, I have “lowerarm_l” selected in UE4 and Blender, but they highlight different bones.
When I try to apply part of it to an existing character (the one whose skeleton I made mine after) it doesn’t adopt the animations of their blueprint, even though I did set it correctly. I made the skeletal mesh a child of the character mesh, and applied the character mesh’s anim class, which I’ve seen work for other people. The only reason the helmet is in a relatively normal location is because my character and this one are the same height.
I don’t care how useless you think your info might be, if you’re reading this post, please comment. I’m desperate, I can’t happily proceed with modeling characters without knowing I can make them work in the engine. Don’t assume I know how to do anything, even the most basic stuff, because I just started with skeletal meshes. I’m probably just missing some basic concept or technique.

The goal for this character is to be an enemy in my game, but I also want the player to be able to wear each section. So the 4 sections are in groups.
