I deleted by accident the "Saved" folder in my project and i can need some help pls

I made a big mistake by deleting the “Saved” folder in my project :person_facepalming: and replaced it with a 1 week old backup one.
I awso deleted the “config” folder and replace it awso with one week older one.

Now i have the problem that all my work for the past week is gone. My blueprints are still in the “Content” folder in the project but many are not recognized at all in the open project as if they aren’t there. And the ones that gets recognized have a lot of stuff missing in them. Basicly everything that i added for the last week is just not in there. Same to all new files made like textures that i added this week are awso missing in the open project. The files tough are in the directory in the Project “Content” folder. The problem is that opening the project cannot recognize them anymore.

Is there anything i can do to “rebuild” my blueprints and get them to show back in the Project?
I’m right now trying different recovery tools to get back the deleted files and i hope i can retrieve the original “Config” and “Saved” folder. So far i cannot say if this will work then im still waiting for the recovery tools to finish (it takes hours). If there is any other solution to get my files to work since they are all still in the “Content” folder" i would really greatly appreciate any help on this.

After opening your editor, open the Output Log panel and look for any errors. The errors should explain what went wrong and why your assets aren’t loading. If the fix isn’t obvious after reading the log, copy the log contents here so we can help you.

Alternatively (or additionally), you can try exiting UE, deleting the two CachedAssetRegistry files in AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/VERSION/Intermediate, and reopening UE, which should force UE to recache all assets in your project (AFAIK).

Additionally, after you fix this, I strongly recommend you to start using some form of source control, be it Perforce, Git, or whatever else UE supports.

Thx for the reply and help

I just try to remove the “CachedAssetRegistry_0” in AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/VERSION/Intermediate
I see only 1 file tough called “CachedAssetRegistry_0”. After removing it and starting the Project nothing changed the files are still not recognized. Does this maybe have something to do with the “Config” folder which i awso deleted and replaced with a one week old one ? Basicly after deleting “CachedAssetRegistry_0” the project still thinks that everything is like a week befor even if the new files are in the “Content” folder. Or do i have to find the second file you mentioned ? Because i don’t have it in the location from above only this 1 file..

Not sure what to look for in the Output Log. It is very long

Filter the output log for Errors (the red messages), either through the search filter, or through the checkbox/buttons filter, and either copy the errors here or read them to figure out what went wrong. (I’m assuming there are at least some errors since you’re saying a bunch of stuff isn’t loading)

This is how the search filter looks:

This is how the 5.6. buttons filter setup looks:

(turn on either one of those and read the errors or copy them here)

Oh i see by filtering the errors there aren’t many acctually. Thats all the errors i have:

I think the problem is the engine thinks it is 1 week old. Like if i were to open my project a week ago. Everything is set up back in time as it was back then. All the new files from this week are there but not recognised. I tought deleting “CachedAssetRegistry_0” should force the engine to check all the files in there but for some reason it doesn’t do anything after i removed this file.

  1. Are you sure those are all the errors in the log? You didn’t filter it, you might’ve missed some further up.
  2. Did you deleting both of these?

To 1. Yes this are all errors that i have. There is nothing more a few “warnings” after it about some megascans but not of importance i guess. Thats all the red errors i have. I did filter it..

For nr2. I do not have the second file Named “CachedAssetRegistryDiscovery.bin” At least not in the location you mentioned. There i had only 1 file and it was the “CachedAssetRegistry_0.bin”
i will try search for the second file.

I found that in AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/5.5/Saved - that there are some files with names like " projectname-date__and_time_backup.log" Those contain my work from today and all the assets/blueprints from today. Can those somehow load them maybe ? I’m going to search for the “CachedAssetRegistryDiscovery.bin” since i didn’t had it at least not in the location AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/5.5/Intermediate . And after deleting the only 1 file that i had “CachedAssetRegistry_0.bin” right now the “Intermediate” folder is empty without this file after starting the engine multiple times now.

Edit: even manually searching for “Cached..” in the whole unreal 5.5 folder (AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/5.5) There are 0 files now. Only the 1 was there bevor i remove it and now there are 0 files.

Nah that ...backup.log is just a backup of the log file (basically the output log text). There is a backup option for assets, but those would end up in your /Saved folder, and you’d said you deleted that folder so that won’t work.

If there were any version incompatibility errors reported, I’d suggest disablings.EnforcePackageCompatibleVersionCheck and trying to open the assets, but you’re saying you can’t even see the assets…

Are you sure you didn’t just filter out the content browser, hiding the assets? Like this (where only Animation Blueprints are shown, and my folder has none, but it has other assets which are now hidden):

Or maybe one of these options?

If those .uasset files are indeed within the project root on the disk, UE should try to load them and report if something goes wrong… so maybe they are there but just hidden? If you start your game, do you get any errors indicating that stuff is missing?

Nope im not hiding those blueprints. I wish that was it..

After starting the engine unfortunatly it says nothing is missing. No errors or anything different.

The engine thinks it is back in time from a week ago. This must have to do with the “Config” folder which i replaced as well (all assets are there tough in the “Content” folder nothing was deleted from there)
So the engine thinks that my project is exactly the same as it was 1 week ago. If i go to my Content folder in the OS i can see all the new blueprints and assets that i made this week. But in the engine everything is set back to how it was a exactly a week ago. Even all the new logic that i added to some blueprints are reversed back and the newly added logic is deleted. New blueprints added this week are in the Content folder in my documents/myproject/Content and i can see them but not after i open the engine.

I’m out of good ideas, here are some bad ideas (grasping at straws, hopefully someone else comes in with something better if none of these work):

  • The config folder should only have a few .ini files, try (backing them up) and deleting the folder completely; maybe the config you copied in somehow ignores your project’s folders, and AFAIK UE should just generate new defaults if you delete those.
  • Are you sure you’re opening the correct .uproject file? If you’re starting UE through the epic launcher, try reimporting the project.
  • As a last resort, you could tell us your engine version, zip the .uproject and Sources and Content folders and upload them here so I (or someone else) can take a look (probably tomorrow though, going offline soon). If you don’t accidentally include build files and your project isn’t huge or secret, it should be fairly easy.

Holy :poop: i made it !

Everything is working now. I cannot explain how exactly i did it. I combined some ini files from AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/5.5/Saved and awso downgraded my version again but i keep the newest “content” folder and used from AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/5.5/Saved the “Autosave” folder and move that to myproject/save/autosave. Then im not sure what else i did exactly but it is working now  :victory_hand:

I’m glad you figured it out!

I’m assuming this happened while upgrading to 5.6. If you’re planning to do so again, I’d maybe recommend starting with a clean 5.6 project, exporting all of your current 5.5 stuff through the Export tool in UE, and then Import it into the new project, just in case.

Also, definitely look up version control software so you avoid these kinds of issues in the future. xD
