I was considering upgrading my project from 5.3 to 5.5, but whenever I try to install any newer engine version, the installation prompt says that THE DEFAULT PATH THAT IT ITSELF PROVIDES would exceed the file path limit.
Now, this is a problem for two reasons:
The default install location is already rather short, I can’t make it much shorter without it being an abomination.
I have long file paths enabled, this should not be an issue.
After a few tries, I clicked the install button faster than it could run the file path length check and gray itself out. So it’s downloading the files. Wish me luck.
Regardless of whether this works or not, I have a few very strong words to say to whoever came up with the brilliant idea of this whole installation process.
In the impossible event that they are bothering to check the forums:
Why would you exceed the normal file path length? Was there really no way to fit things inside the normal path length?
After exceeding the normal file path length, why did you not change the default install location to try and make it fit?
After not changing the default install location, why didn’t you update your own installer to check if the system allows long file paths?
How did you even manage to test this? How is anyone managing to install these newer versions? Is everyone else just installing this straight on their C drive?
