i was going ot change it to the latest 1.8 is that safe?

Yeah, that looks like it might be the jdk, did you end up changing it to 1.7 like in the Twitch stream?

The twitch stream is the very latest info we have on the GearVR setup, so I kinda doubt it. It would be best if you followed the instructions as listed to see if you can package at all first before you start customizing.
