How Would You Model A Dirt Path?

I keep seeing people make little dirt roads with the spline tool, but I can’t get my head around what a mesh like that would look like or how I make it. I tried creating a plane and putting a dirt path texture on it, but it didn’t work that well. Is that what it comes down to? Any help is appreciated.
