How to use the vdf-to-egs tool to convert Steam achievements to Epic Games Store?

I’ve sent a private support message as well, but maybe it could be solved here.

Although I can’t share the vdf / txt info here, I’ve included a screenshot of the command prompt and my email to Epic.

We are a small indie publisher, and are trying to publish several of our developer’s games on the store.

When trying to use the tool to convert Steam achievements, there seems to be an issue. As there was not much for documentation, and we ourselves are not the developers of the games (or technically devs at all), we were hoping for some assistance.

Following steps 1-7, our developers shared the achievement data in a .txt file. I saved it as a .vdf file as UTF-8.

For number 8), I ran the tool from the command line but then run into issues. (*note: I have an amd system. But I wasn’t why it is in the name of the exe or if that matters)

Please see the attached screenshot and vdf file for reference.

It seemed to have… done something the first time. The output folder (epic-achievements) remains empty, and hidden items are also set to be shown.

My first attempt was just with the .txt file as mentioned in 7), but I then converted it after guessing from the vdf references. Doing so didn’t seem to make a difference, and changing the game/achievement document did not seem to make a difference either. It says the file already exists, but again, the output folder is empty.

Looking forward to getting these games on the store! Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Hi there,

Apologies for the mishap with the email address. We have resolved the issue with not being able to send to it. Would you mind resending the email with the VDF file attached so we can take a closer look at what could be going wrong?

Thanks in advance!
Rajen

Note from Epic: “in our ecosystem the APIs will still need to be implemented in the game to know when achievements should be unlocked for players.”

So hopefully the devs want to work on it. Older games will probably never make it…

But if you have the same problem with the tool, try this:

Re-downloading the tool (updates are made, but not really shown)

If you are getting the “Cannot create a file when that file already exists” error, the solution is to delete the output folder “epic-achievements”.

Additionally, it doesn’t make any subfolders, so you’ll have to extract the contents and delete it again for each game you want to do.
