How to set simple Material on a simple Spline Mesh?

My experience with Materials is poor, and with splines just a few days.

I can set my rope material on any simple cylinder and adjust it well, but no chance with a spline. Completely no idea how to make it right, no time to learn deep what UV is, any quick solutions for such simple situation?

As you can see there is two problems:

  1. Inconsistent UV scale(stretched along differently).
  2. Start+End of the materials are mismatch where cylinder meshes connect.

Simple solution is to make the material world aligned

No, World aligned is what I tried at the very beginning and it didn’t worked for a rope for the obvious reason. It should be aligned along the cylinder.

After few days I admitted there is no simple solution for this. Now I am for any difficulty solution. How can I make even chessboard UV along entire length of the cylinder?

If you’re using a standard material, you’ll never get perfect checkerboard, unless you don’t stretch the cylinders. Not handy

If you don’t distort too much, you can do it with a standard mesh

It is possible to do world aligned that does move and rotate with the object. But, yes, there is no one-click solution. Subtracting the object location in the WA material fixes the moving with the object part, but getting it to rotate with it is more of a fiddle. There’s a video here ( yikes )

He does several on this subject, I’m afraid I can’t recall the one you need. It’s a PHD in world alignment.

Splines are also part of PGC now, maybe there’s something there, but I don’t’ know, that’s just an idea…

I know that, that tutorial rope video I started with, good one. But my rope sections are completely different in length, some were absolutely long and straight, basically single long cylinder.
So I made my own variation of the spline making function, which would create spline mesh of stock meshes of the same length, just a lot of them. Worked kinda, but another problems came with it, so I am about to give up really:

And I don’t want wrap my rope texture on Unreal spline anymore, I have imported cable mesh which is very good cylinder, ready to use. Just need to figure out how put rope Material on it…

Is there any good tools in Blenders or other 3D modeling applications which would do such thing automatically to the single snaky cylinder?

I see you have the spline rotation problem…

If you have made the rope mesh in a certain way, you might be able to just unwrap it in one go with ‘follow active quads’ ( I’m just looking for a decent vid )

Yes, this Blender tutorial is exactly it!

Quite simple to do once you understand how.

Yes, it’s a bit of a fiddle, but really does the trick, eh?
