How to load custom mesh over sample skeleton

I went through the maya plug-in animation tutorials, but I cannot seem to figure out how to bind the sample skeleton to my custom character mesh.
Im not an animator, but I just want to test my character in engine to see running and jumping for deformation testing.

I noticed that fpp skeletons are the same as the usual maya skeletons. If I just bind my character to that skeleton instead, would the character work with the anim blueprints in game by any chance?
