How to have root motion only affect 1 axis?

So I have a root motion for my jump. I’m in the middle of researching what’s the best way I can go about creating a stylized jump. I tried to edit the gravity scale so that I can control the hang time mid-air, but I find it to be very unintuitive when I want to make reiterations and want to match up the capsule movement with the jump animation.

That’s why I tried root motion, because I can animate the translate Y in Maya for the character, and I have much more control. When it’s in engine, I would only like the root motion to affect the up axis tho, so that I’m getting the stylized jump, but I can still move left and right mid-air. Is there a way to achieve this? If so, maybe there’s a different direction I should head in for achieving more control for a stylized jump?
