how to get best texture quality ?

it seems the default setting for texture/coloring, I can get a little poor quality of the texture(maybe like a vertex point color)
anyone can tech me how to get the best texture quality ?
thanks alot

Hi wangsgi
The key is the UNWRAP tool and its settings. If the texture resolution is not good, increase the MAX TEXTURE COUNT, so when it finishes and you click on a 3D model, you will get information on its TEXTURE QUALITY

thanks a lot !!
currently I am working on 2500 photos 6000*4000 resolution photos, is there a suggestion for the texture quality setting value ?

Hi wangsgi
it depends on the subject and use of the data.
In RECONSTRUCTION -> SETTINGS -> COLORING/TEXTURING change DOWNSCALE IMAGES BEFORE TEXTURING to 1x
And then play with the UNWRAP and MAX TEXTURE COUNT NUMBER and look at the TEXTURE QUALITY, it should be around or precisely 100%

so your meaning set the DOWNSCALE IMAGES BEFORE TEXTURING to over ten ? or 1.x ? or 1.0 ?
what the steps or the UNWRAP & MAX texture count number setting ?
btw. is there any pdf or online help can be download ? the RC is really cool , but manual seems not very detailed yet

Hi wangsgi
to ONE, so that it uses full-resolution images for texture calculation.
If you set it to 2, it would downscale an image 2 times, so say you have an 18 Mpix image, so it will be downscaled to 4,5 Mpix and then used for actual calculation of texture (txtr).

when you set it, then you need to go to the second step:
UNWRAP tool -> set say 16k txtr resolution and INCREASE the MAXIMAL TEXTURE COUNT -> click on UNWRAP
when it finishes the inspection, the result will be like in the previous reply, so you will see its TEXTURE QUALITY. if it is not 100 %, then INCREASE the MAX TEXTURE COUNT and hit UNWRAP again to see if you can get to the 100 %.

will the UNWRAP Tool overwrite my UV map that I created in ZBrush?

Hi Marcus Milne

Yes, because the UNWRAP is a UV creation tool…

I need to Change the setting of the unwrap after the texture/color steps done ? or just setting the value then do the color/texture work ?

Hi wangsgi

As you can read, first set the downscale, then use the UNWRAP…

Unwrap settings seem logical and straightforward but I am actually not getting optimal results.

I set Unwrap to layout UVs using ‘Maximal texture count’ method, with Max res of 16k, default Gutter size (2) and Maximal textures count of 16. When textures are generated it turns out there are only 10 of them and resulting Texture quality is just 55%. Why CR didn’t generate 16 of them to achieve better quality?

Hi andrew.poznanski1
Every time DOUBLE the UV count. So when you have used 16, for the next round set 32. if it is not enough, set 64.
But I would recommend you to use 8k texture, if possible

HI Wishgranter,
Is there a setting to increase the Texture utilization?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill
For you is mostly important the TEXTURE QUALITY percentage. The texture utilization is almost IMPOSSIBLE to increase, and in most cases it is done by creating custom UVs in external applications like Zbrush etc.

Thanks Wishgranter

Where do you set the “TEXTURE QUALITY” percentage? Is that an environment variable? I don’t see a preference/setting anywhere for that.

Hi Robert Moggach
It’s simply done with increasing the texture space, that means increasing the texture resolution or texture count in UNWRAP. So 100 % means you use all “source pixels” in the texture…
