How to export/import instanced meshes into UE4 from Maya (like MODO)?

Hey guys, I’m working primarily in MODO, and when I have instanced meshes and export them, I can import them into engine using the new Scene Import option, I’ll only have 1 mesh in my asset library, but the instances will still appear in the Outliner as instances of that mesh (as expected).

I’ve tried doing it in Maya, since I’m working in collaboration with another artist and he’s running Maya, but I couldn’t get this to work. Must be doing something wrong I guess… Any chance for a step by step mini-guide (text, dot points)? Tried Google it but I’m getting results regarding writing blueprints to instance meshes along splines etc inside the engine which is not what I’m after :]
