If this is all one mesh with multiple material element slots then I would go with either changing the alpha of set material (make it transparent) or changing color all together.
How are these suppose to be “destroyed”? When you walk on them with a character or a mouse click? It would be helpful if you could put all of this in a context, like what is the end goal here.
