How to create Textures for the UE4?

Hey guys, just because I have been searching for 2 hours and cant find anything, could someone tell me how to create custom textures please? Sorry for being novice to all this lol

There are several ways

-create one out from a picture (you need a camera)
-draw one (e.g in photoshop)
-use a combination between a picture + drawing

so its literally as easy as using a photo? thats made it so much simpler than what i was thinking haha thankyou

Yes and no ^^ -> mostly you have to edit the photo (make it seamless, remove shadows, adjust some colours,…)

thats fair, is there a uv / bump map that i would need to create for the textures?

For a good material in the UE4 you mostly need a normal map, diffuse map, specular map, bump/height map (tessellation or parallax shading),… -> you can bake them in your 3d program or use generators
You also have to create a uv in your 3d program so that the texture gets displayed right

can you reccommend a good 3d programme? or is there one with UE4?

I would recommend you “blender” -> it’s free and as good as the expensive ones. Otherwise take a look at 3ds or maya

thats great, thankyou very much

There’s a video tutorial on YouTube on the unreal engine page I wached yesterday…

Which one?

Take a look at this series, it will teach you the basics of materials (you will need it after you have created your own textures + meshes) https://www.youtube/playlist?list=PLZlv_N0_O1gbQjgY0nDwZNYe_N8IcYWS-

I went ahead and renamed the thread to better match the topic.

Well, that all depends.

One that I like, for creating textures from 2D sources is Knald There is also CrazyBump, but I like Knald better. To each their own.

There is also Substance Painter and Substance Designer. I would suggest picking those 3 up. As far as modelling software, I use Maya -> 3dsMax with Unwrella & UV Packer
