How to create a massive mountain, whilst maintaining detail

I’m creating some landscapes that will contain some stupidly large mountain passes, I’ve been coming across what appears to be a limitation (either of my understanding or the engine - hoping my understanding!).

What I’d like to achieve is create a mountain that from sea to peak will resemble some of the largest on earth (~8km to 9km). What I started finding, is the landscape tool appears to require some tweaking to get close to this, & it takes away the ability to apply enough detail to suit the project I’m working on.

So with this goal in mind - how would some of you recommend I approach this?

Not using the landscape for one.

Make a custom mesh using Houdini so that you only have high tris where you need them to be.
