How to build a tower crane. rig or not?


I haven’t used rig and bones and trying to learn. So i have started with a simple tower crane from a YouTube clipp - YouTube

My goal is to move the crane arm and hook with keyboard or mouse.

So i have made the model in 3ds max as the video shows.

But I dont now the next step.

Do I need a skeleton?

When do you need bones? In the video there is only link and constrains. Shall I add bones? In 3ds max or directly in UE4?

you could probably just attach the sections with sockets that you could rotate or extend as needed… not sure, but i dont see why it wouldnt work
