How to animate a snake slithering?

I’m trying to figure out how to make my Snake Blender model animate slithering in a smooth way.

I’ve tried to animate it myself and it just turns into a junk mess. I’m also starting from 0 to 100 frames in Blender so if someone can show me which bones to use that would be awesome!

This is my first Blender animal without any arms or legs to animate so the snake is kind of a challenge.

Hey there!

I would start by using Spline IK so you don’t have to animate every joint, I can post a tutorial here if you need one. You can make a sine-wave shaped curve and set your joints to that: all you need to do is pull the sine-wave through the joints.

I for sure would need a tutorial for the spline IK, most of my animating just involves moving the bones into different places which is a real pain at times

Is there a reason you need this as a skeletal mesh animation?

Making a sinusoidal shader for it would be a lot better and a ton more efficient…
