Hi all,
I’m creating an obby island with 7 rounds, each round containing around 5 levels. I’m looking for the best way to let players unlock shortcuts back to previously completed rounds while preventing other players from accessing rounds they haven’t unlocked.
The idea is to give players another opportunity to collect any collectibles they missed on their first run without having to replay the entire obby from the beginning.
The planned layout: The main lobby would have doors leading to Rounds 2-7. The starting area of each of Rounds 2-7 would also have doors leading to the subsequent rounds. These doors would act as shortcuts, allowing players to return to rounds they’ve already completed.
There are a couple of gameplay constraints:
-
Players need to keep at least 2 inventory slots free, as some levels require a weapon and/or item to complete.
-
Player inventory is cleared after each level for specific gameplay reasons.
I’ve tested using individual Remote devices to provide shortcuts, which worked reasonably well for returning to a limited number of rounds. However, this approach is restricted by the number of available inventory slots, and the inventory-clearing mechanic creates an additional complication.
Is there a way to assign permanent keys or unlock items to players when they complete a round, with those unlocks surviving a Player Checkpoint device with Clear Inventory enabled? Alternatively, is there a better approach to implementing player-specific shortcuts without relying on inventory items?
I haven’t implemented it yet, but I’d also like the system to work alongside persistent player saves, so that unlocked rounds remain accessible when a player returns to the island.
I would like to make the system multiplayer compatible (i.e. prevent new players access to later levels unlocked by older players) but if I have to make the island a single player then so be it.
Any suggestions or alternative approaches would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time!
