How to add second controller in local coop(no split screen?)

hi
i am wondering how can i add a secondary character(think diddy kong/cappy in Mario odyssey or player2 in rayman legends)
in a local coop game(no split screen- couch coop platformer).
I wasn’t able to find much information on how to achieve this, especially if i want the first player to have control of the secondary character if there’s no second player.

i figured it out. I’m just not sure how to at game start tell the game we have a second player ready.
