How to add gun into Sequencer?

What is the best way to add a gun to a characters hand in Sequencer. I know a gun is attached by sockets in a game, but I’m making a video in Sequencer and not a video game. When I click and drag my gun to the character I get a pop up window that asks me which bone to attach it to. So I attach it to the hand bone. The problem is, after this the gun turns to an odd angle and I must rotate it to the correct angle which is inconvenient. Is there a better way of doing this?
