How sharp is sharp? - and noise too

I would appreciate guidance from you experts. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ezbnjq75uexc3e0/DSC_0001.jpg?dl=0 is a typical 10mpx photo taken to the highest standard I know how. Is it sharp enough, and what about noise (esp in the shadow of the mirror frame)?

I know it’s a problematic photo because few ‘things’ for RC to identify – but my question is specifically about sharpness and noise, whether those are why this one  won’t register in any Component.

Nikon D60, 10.2mpx effective, 23.6x15.8 CCD with DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55  f3.5-5.6.

Zoom taped at 18mm. Manual focus taped at 1.50m, at f11 gives 0.77 to 34.1m DoF ‘normal’ or 0.88 to 5.07m to a higher standard of sharpness. ISO100. Tripod, 1.3sec exposure, fired remote from digiCamControl on laptop.

Photo taken at distance 1.6m; the width of wall pictured is 1.04m, width of photo 3872 px.

So 1px measures 0.27mm on the wall.

Hi Tom,

I think that both, sharpness and noise, are definitely ok. The wall is not really suitable to judge it properly, but neiter are responsible for the problem of not aligning. How do the neighboring shots look like? Because I think it should just be possible to align it with a suitable neighbor - there are few features, but RC should be able to pick out enough…

That’s a load off my mind about sharpness and noise - thanks Gotz. Didn’t look good to me when zoomed in on screen to visible-pixel scale.

So back to neighbour/coverage - for another thread.

No problem. Glad to unburden you!

I already suspected that you are over-worrying about that…

If it looks crisp at 100% - it’s sharp. If you think " where are my glases" or you want to squint your eyes, it’s not sharp.

There are examples here in the forum where people wonder why something doesn’t work weel and whe I look a the pictures you can sometimes already tell by a large thumbnail, that it’s super blurry…

Oh, and if you really want to see how well your camera deals with noise, you need to take a picture of a black surface, non-reflective that is…

Nice one. How about a photo with the lens cap on?

I fyour camera can focus that close, then why not?

No seriously, it needs to be homogenous - just like the comparison I linked to once, there you can see the most noise on the black surface…
