How i can change between static mesh and skeletal mesh based on distance in a efficient way

how i can change between static mesh and skeletal mesh based on distance in a efficient way
i have several Ais (agents) they are skeletal meshes - i want to hide the skeletal and replace with static mesh is there and way to do it without using tick events ?
im doing this for performance reasons
and dont worry about animating the static mesh i have VAT
