How does modding exactly work?

Hello everyone, so I see this subforum exists now, I would like to ask how exactly making a game moddable works, what I mean is, how do we build a editor specific to our game that can compile assets than then the game will load?, the situation would be to not require to redistribute the game’s source code/Bps.

How does UT implement this? I know the editor has buttons to compile .pak files that then can be run in the game, how does this exaclty work?


This seems to be very unclear at the movement. Think EPIC is working on some documentation though.

Tom Looman, has a small tutorial and a sample project so you can see how it can work. I found for me personally, was after I downloaded his sample. I created a game using FPS template and then followed his tutorial.
