This is on the horizon for the upcoming winter, that is, we will be restricted to maximum energy usage. That could mean that high end GPUs won’t fit into the allowances for each consumer household.
The energy prices have just begun rising and are said to rise a lot more this year.
Manufacturing has begun moving from China and back to the West, which means a huge increase in energy demand. Not to forget climate politics.
Besides games, I can certainly envision a near future with bans on NFT mining and some ceiling or bans on energy used for crypto mining.
Compiling shaders is definitely something we will not take for granted before this year is over.
you could get one of those devices that generates electricity by riding a stationary bike. Something I’ve meant to look into for some time now. Two birds with one stone - get your exercise and offset electricity usage somewhat.
More people using these things likely drive demand to make them even more efficient in terms of convertage ( i dunno actual word).
there is no energy rationing?
Not yet, but it is likely and has been brought up over here in Denmark. They talked about prioritising the public sector and consumers, and limit energy to businesses.
Specifically mentioned that gaming is going to be a luxury many families will have to ban their kids from, to not go broke, due to an extreme rise in prices already.
Put that into perspective with a fast reduction in imported energy and possible penalties on non-green sources. Then add to that a rising and soon, large influx of energy needs for industry, because so many companies are moving back from China, due to endless disruptions over there.
600W to play video games only for a gpu no wonder governments take action
Not to forget crypto. No doubt they will use this to put it under law, already planned in the EU.
I think it will make sense to make games super optimised and then put the energy use of the game in to hardware requirements. It might actually be important to sell the games.
I think you could have huge performance with just a few Watts if the priority of companies was not performance but energy saving a nutella face boy to play video games will use 1500W in a couple of years i foresee an avalanche of poop that will hit us all Nostradamus type
In other words, the world is in the market for energy friendly ways to stay current.
I have a feeling that shader programmers are about to be in super high demand.
More on this energy rationing in Europe:
It’s real now. Better compile your shaders before it’s too late!
in 20 years you connect 220v line directly from the wall to the video card like in this troll video
Probably 16 ampere industrial for the VR version.
I cannot watch, but give it a few years and they will have a super energy saving gaming GPU and a super expensive crypto/NFT GPUs with some carbon tax on top.
This video might be a prediction of things to come.

when they sold me the Rift 1, they didn’t tell me it consumes 100W OMG the PSU should run from a minimum of 30% to a maximum of 80% of capacity not to die in a year…PSU serial killer
if you make a diagram with the power usage computing power on year gred and assume that the grow trend will be exponential faster talk about 5000W home computer just wait 30 40 years maximum
Quantum computers are going to be in fashion and that stuff quantum cips requires cooling and extra ton off electronics and te coling…don’t know exactly the numbers but a super freezer consumes a lot of W… 50 year in and we have home game 5000W PCs minimum 5000W
there is a freek need for energy usually the Japanese are right go full nuclear ve need use rockets to send waste somewhere in space solar sistem is big and the best tactic by all accounts
5% of the Sahara desert filled with solar panels they’re not peanuts if you take the calculator
put solar panels around the train railys with 4 rows of panels on each side maintenance can be done by a hijacked trane vehicle built to clean and replace panels in minutes and freeways anti-noise panels filled with solar panels and chains of rafts on the rivers the river energy generators
the greatest political geniuses are not geniuses and the owners of highways and railways are the least intelligent of all all that wasted space with weeds and trees and I also spend money to cut everything thinks of you what idiots ahahha they would go trains for free and they would also have a nice extra
Update: Prices in Denmark keep hitting an all time high and are now at about 200% growth from last year. Fortunately, the prices are still very low compared to what we can expect.
I already uninstalled UE5 and would encourage anyone who won’t make money or has a tight budget, to do the same immediately. Don’t act when it is too late.
you know the movie Thor love and thunder better you not to know how much computing power it takes to do that stuff and how muce a harwear and man power can cost… be realistic if you want to recreate a divine appearance game you need divine presence hardware an industry law since 1980 if economy sucks don’t blame UN5 which requires PRO hardware nd in 99% of cases a team off heads of various dimensions, length, weight and depth and NUBERS!!!
you can make a smartphone games for a card box VR MMO on a laptop low budget 32 gb ram 4gb gpu… un4 0 stres on a radom place on a platent best choice Hawaiian islandd sea whit a starlink plate on a boat and 10 barrels of Blood Wine well aged
I think you may have a point here @Data_D_Soong
Make it simple, F the graphics, make it interesting.
Games that come to mind: Yatzy, Chess & Tetris.
The best games are thousands of years old.
Throw the ball over the house has more invested playtime than Fortnite to date.
I have probably put 2.000 hours into that game alone during my childhood.

@Engineering_Visions I know it may sound apocryphal blasphemous tabo topik in today’s market line…A videogame if it is beautiful si beautiful without graphics black and white and light siadows zero 600 800 resolution just you and a game nothing else…
take the game of chess it can be 4 bits Comodor64 with huge pixels or tomorow 8K pieces that make a very stylish combat that feels like seeing a movie every time you move a pon, but in the end bot are just chess the same game…today they take a fart they make it a modern work of art… 8K smely fart
we all know that unreal engine 5 tends more detailed like reality itself is make a human eye become obsolete…in 20 max 50 years the technology will be limited by human limited hardwer
Todey videogame market offers look like oil sales offers during the 7 sister period single price if you like, buy if it doesn’t use horses and coal a bit like Putin today

Reminds me of Germany, still using coal for, if I remember correctly, 25% of their electricity production.
These are great times to really optimise the s… out of everything.
One thing I did, was to create a super optimised project. On my Mac frying pan of a laptop, the Stat Unit went from around 80ms to 15ms for the rendering.
I would assume with all things considered in a simple game, the ceiling would probably be around 30-40ms.
Might actually want to install that energy hog again, get it all shining on low quality and share the process and settings on this forum. Or just complain and leave you all behind like some bitter old man
lock this one spimple game play 30m even though it is an mmo is light don’t you think? things can be read even if they are complicated and many
PS1 textures tipe are mega light
Update: Britain to see 80% spike in energy bills as crisis deepens - ABC News
“We are being forced into poverty, whilst others who are already in poverty will be forced into a life-or-death situation this winter,” he added. “That is the level of discontent and despair we are talking about.”
Most likely the last update. Warning people is a waste of time. It only leads to discussions, very few prepare and the rest is shocked when things go bad.
in my opinion the cip maker architects they should make a whole computer on a sigle silicone big disk the cool machine off varius tipe that prints nano ciruitiesiste already exists we might as well print an entire PC just pass the disk from one printer to another GPU CPU RAM SSD all in 1 mega cip maybe 50 100 years those geniuses of the CIP builder gona do it (It’s really a shame that those idiots have patent conflicts and before seeing everything expire the one CIP PC with market performance it will drive at least 40 years)
I also made a terrifying rough calculation on the energy consumption of programs running unused on the computers of inexperienced people like my 90 year old grandmother or unwise kids newbies in all computer maters firs dey on a keybord o yars or forever
@Engineering_Visions better to talk about bills after Christmas, the situation will be 120%+ minimuI don’t think mortgages and the debt market are doing well hahahaha
