Ever since the dawn of time, Megascans assets have had one eternal truth: once imported, their file names are cryptic.
For example:
Smooth_Concrete_Wall_uhnlfbvn, the assets are as so.
Lawn_Grass_tkynejer
…and so on.
When I’m searching for materials in a project, I’d expect to look for something like “Grass” or “Concrete.” But without renaming these materials or assets manually, it’s slow to work with because you end up digging through folders instead of using the asset window search.
This is even more frustrating when reusing textures. If I need a metal texture, I can’t just search for “metal” I have to browse through seperate folders. And to make matters worse, the imported folders aren’t particularly well organized!
So my question is:
Is everyone renaming and reorganizing these assets to make them more usable in a production environment? Or is there a better workflow I’m missing?
The only solution I can think of would be to create a script that automatically renames everything based on the folder name.
Manually moving folders into an organized structure isn’t too bad, but honestly, I’m surprised it’s like this. We all have better things to do than rename and move files. ![]()
