I am developing a game with an indie team from over 9 months and soon gonna upload some videos of my game so that’s why I want to know how do indie games become famous? We don’t have a lot of money and may even start a project on kickstarter
By developing a badass game, I guess.
But how will anyone even know about that game?
This is a pretty complex topic which depends on many factors.
Just some thoughts:
-as already mentioned, you need a good game (but you can also get well known with a bad one ^^)
-a good marketing/promotion:
make use of social medias -> so you need a twitter, facebook, youtube, forum,… accounts
make sure that you regularly post something to keep the attention of the people
think carefully about what you post
go on events like develop in brighton, GDC, gamescom -> there are always some special parts for indie game devs
get in touch with other indie devs -> cross promotion
attract attention -> “Hatred” (you could read about it on nearly every newspaper)
…
One of the most important things to be added to figthers list would be building a community, you will need an army of followers to get noticed. A good way to start is to build a dev-blog of your game, from a very early stage of development, you write articles show stuff (be careful about what you show as figther told you, competitors are everywhere!) and you MUST be active within the community. For example if you develop using UE4 make sure to be active in the forum, to share your knowledge, help others and a large etc…
It’s a pretty loaded question. The “top” indie scene is a tight clique and they aren’t above pushing each other ( Fish is known to be a close friend to the heads of the IGF, where Fez won an award). For a “nobody” it’s extremely hard these days to penetrate into those “inner circles”, but then again, you don’t need and / or want to necessarily do that. Ignore indie award events, as they are more or less blatant peer favoring and focus on building a community with dev blogs, video previews etc.
There are still a lot of good gaming forums on the internet, you can post progress on the game there. Most people here are gamers as well, and the WIP forum exists for this reason (Epic also promotes games on their social media pages pretty often). At the end of the day, if you’re doing something worthwhile, even with the smallest of efforts you will get a community.
I’ll have to agree with most of the people here. Showing off your game on many devblogs, youtube, forums etc. Is what will get you noticed. Showing lots of updates and engaging the community is also important. Another big part that many people miss is emailing press. A huge press list that you can email will definitely help if one of them sticks and talks about your game. Sometimes going to events and having someone that owns a big site can definitely boost your viewers.
Its part skill and also part luck if your game will become famous or well known to the public.
Sadly, making a good game is not enough anymore.
As you’re reading this thousands of developers are making their games (mainly mobile) and hundreds are publishing them on the market right now!
A harsh reality is, no matter how good your game is, it’s like a particle in an enormous ocean. Chances to have your game successful is near to zero.
There are thousands of good games which are on the market right now, but are literally invisible because it wasn’t promoted properly (or wasn’t promoted at all!).
This is where PR and Marketing kick in!
Well the big thing as an Indie is to drop the big studio attitude.
“Our project is super secrete because we don’t what someone else stealing our ideas.”
It does not work where talking about your game at every opportunity does.
Toss <cough cough> NDA requirement out the window and let anyone on your team talk about what they are doing or working on. Create a small community and let them make suggestions and if they are good implement them and give them credit. Let them in on Alpha testing, we have a QA group where anyone can join by just asking.
If no one knows about your game until release day then your already lagging behind.
As for Mister Fish???
He is either the biggest cry baby or absolutely brilliant at self promotion. Every time he has a hissy fit his game is back in the news and even Total Biscuit gave him a half an hour.

That’s how to “make” your game get famous.
Marketing. Even the crappiest game ever can be “famous” (or would that be, infamous? w/e… money is money).
- Word of mouth: give a demo to the YT celebrity gamers to try your game)
- Make a kickstarter: Might not need the funds, but its good for visibility
- Make a advertisement rotation and submit it to adsense
- Demo the game: Take the game to different cons in your area and demo. Free swag also helps.
- Steam: Get the game on Steam
