How do I save changes to the skeleton within the skeleton tree?

Basically I have a skeletal mesh imported… i went into the skeleton tree and made the neck and head longer and larger which works with my imported animations… after clicking save. It does not make any changed to the mesh, how do i save minor adjustments to the bones etc? Thanks
