How do I fix my Finder after Unreal 4 crashed in middle of opening it to choose where to save a file?

Ok. I was using Unreal 4 for 2nd time on my MacBook Pro

Here are Specs:
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

I opened it up, went to new project, selected 3rd person, then i click little … button to browse where I wanted to save my project file at. In middle of that Finder window opening, Unreal 4 crashed and then my laptop crashed. Now I thought nothing of it at first but when I turned my computer back on my Finder was turning off and on in a constant loop. It says that Finder unexpectedly closed and if I would like to reopen it or don’t reopen it. But here is catch that window box keeps flicking on and off as if it automatically hits reopen cause its finder. Thats like integrated everything. Thats how you navigate and see your files. So now I have this constant box me if I want to fix Finder but I can’t.

Here is what I have tried with help of internet searches, friends, AppleCare Support, and my school’s tech support.

  1. Turn it off and back on (Restart, Hard Restart, Safe Mode)
  2. Disk Utility (Verify Permissions,Repair Permissions) from lauchpad and command+r when turning on comp
  3. Terminal (delete preference list for Finder, killall command)
  4. Reinstall OS X
  5. Force Quit/Relauch
  6. Dragging it to trashcan from launchpad

Now I can still access applications on my dock and whatever happens to be in my launchpad but my finder for most part is kaputt. spotlight works but I can’t access Application Folder with it. I can even access photos in my Iphoto application so its just a matter of fixing Finder. Any help would be most helpful.
I can access my projects still in Unreal 4 but I can’t see where its being saved at cause of finder breaking if I try to open it Unreal and just being broken outside of. Would uninstalling Unreal 4 fix my Finder?

Hi NinaMeep,

We’re not sure what could be causing this, but we have a couple of suggestions to try.

It’s possible your Finder preferences are broken. If you’re able to launch Terminal app with spotlight, you can try entering:

rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

and kill/restart Finder after that.

Also, try launching Console app and check what’s in system log and/or Finder crash logs. It might tell us more.

Thanks!

Hey NinaMeep,

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m marking this post as resolved for tracking purposes. If you’re still having this problem, please try suggestion above and get us those logs if it doesn’t help. Thanks!

Thank you, I did try to fix my finder preferences but it was still a no go. Sorry it took me so long I was busy trying other things and trying to get a hold of a computer. But I was able to use app store to upgrade to Yosemite, cause I figured if my OS was broken maybe upgrading to a new one would fix it. And it did! Thank you so much for all help, you were a really great help.
