How do I edit a rig after it has an animation in UE5?

I imported an animated character from Blender into UE5.1. I found that the fingers don’t look correct on the weapon and I want to fix that in Unreal. When I change it to the way it should look and close it, the changes do not save and it goes back to the original messed up pose.

Is there a way to save these changes in Unreal or do I have to go back to blender and redo the whole thing over again? It took several hours to modify the animation from Mixamo and I would rather not have to do all of that work again. Thanks

Hi there,
Do you want to adjust only the animation? If so, you can do it using Control Rig. Here is an example:

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply but no that’s not what I’m trying to do. The animation is fine, I just want to tweak the fingers in a certain position on a rifle so it looks correct. I can change it in the skeleton but as soon as I close it, the changes don’t save.

No worries. Can you show a screenshot of what you’re trying to do? If you’re editing the pose of the fingers in the Skeleton preview window, it won’t save. You can edit the animation in the sequencer with Control Rig or inside the Animation Editor below. After setting the pose in the desired animation frame, make sure to hit “Key” and save. Animation Sequence editor operates only with FK mode. Control Rig works with FK and IK.

Here is a screenshot of what I’m talking about. You can see that the finger is curled due to the animation set in Mixamo. I want to straighten the finger so it sits along the side of the rifle. However, when I do that and close out of the rig, it goes back to the way it was.

So i just want to know if there is a way to adjust things like this on the skeleton.

Understood. You’re previewing the animation inside the Skeleton Editor. If you hit the record button, you’re going to create a new animation sequence with the adjusted pose. If that doesn’t work, switch to the animation editor in my previous reply.

I still haven’t completely figured it out. Honestly it shouldn’t be this hard to just save the pose in the editor. If it will let you move bones around it should be able to save those changes.

I brought my model back into Blender and fixed it there. If you are using Mixamo like I did for the mocap animations, it automatically poses the fingers in a certain grip for you. The problem I ran into is that the hands are set for an AR-15 style rifle with a pistol grip and not a long gun stock.

This is a great tutorial for what I’ve been trying to do for a few hours! Thank you!
