How can I get a float value for a physics object sliding sideways?

Hi all, i’m fooling about with a little hover car and i’d like to apply damping when the “car” slides sideways. Currently there’s very little friction so it’s a lot like being on ice. This results in the car sliding sideways.
How can I get seperate floats for the amount its sliding sideways and also the direction please?
I’d like to apply a counter force only to that sideways movement of the “car” using the floats.
