How can i debug this animation import problem?

I am trying to import an animated FBX object using the process described here.

The object looks and moves correctly in Blender. Once I import it into UE4, the mesh is correct, but as soon as I assign the animation object to the mesh, the object disappears entirely. This happens both in the skeletal mesh editor and the main game window. I don’t know why. The animation plays fine in Blender. I can still see the object axis that UE4 draws, but the mesh goes away.

Maybe related: the object (and its animation) appear to import correctly, but if i RE-import it from the same file, I get this warning, even when I haven’t changed the file at all:

FBXImport:Warning: Warning Imported bone transform is different from original. Please check Output Log to see detail of error.

I don’t understand this warning. How could the bone transform be different if all I’ve done is import it again from the same source, without having changed that source?

I’ve had numerous problems with the “reimport” button with animated FBX files from Blender. I’ve had to delete the mesh, skeleton, and animations then import them again to get them to work properly. Do they work the first time you import them?

I know what you mean about the re-import button: even without animations in the picture, I have troubles with re-importing and do as you do: delete everything and do it again from scratch. I filed a bug report recently about some of the troubles I see, with as much info as I could give them. I don’t know if they’ll look into it, but I hope so.

In this particular case, I can’t get the animations to work even with no re-importing. It auto-builds me an animation object when I import the mesh, so it did find the animation in the FBX file. But as soon as I try to assign it to the object, the object disappears. I don’t know how to get to the bottom of it.

Is it possible for you to upload the .blend file? I can take a look and see if I can find what’s wrong with it or with ue4
