How 3d models & textures/material instances work/setup in ue4?

How 3d models & textures/material instances work/setup in ue4 ? or is that automatic ?
For example to use 100 trees with the same model and material.

I believe you would want to use the Foliage tool for anything like that. Take a look at the documentation and let me know if you have any questions.
