I am looking for 3 devs for “Rocket Racing: Refuelled”
Rocket Racing: Refuelled is a community-led continuation and reimagining of Rocket Racing, developed in UEFN. The aim is to build on its foundations with new tracks, modes, environments, progression, live events and other features that can continue evolving over time.
Development is already underway, but I’m currently balancing the project alongside sixth form and several other commitments. Because of that, I’m looking to build a small core development team capable of taking ownership of major areas of Refuelled and progressing the project without everything depending on my availability.
I have connections with people in both the casual and competitive Rocket Racing scenes, as well as with the r/RocketRacing community, so an audience for the project has already been established.
Payment
I am offering each core developer a 25% share of the project’s profits for either 6 months after release or for as long as they remain actively involved with Refuelled, whichever is longer.
The intended team structure is:
-
Project Lead / Creative Direction - 25% share of profits.
-
Verse & Gameplay Developer - 25% share of profits.
-
Environment & Track Designer - 25% share of profits.
-
UI Developer - 25% share of profits.
I am open to both long-term and short-term developers, but the minimum commitment I will accept is between now and December, when the initial release is planned, to avoid delays and disruption.
There are no fixed hourly or weekly expectations. I only ask that you are actively and meaningfully contributing to the project and communicate if your availability changes.
Verse & Gameplay Developer
The Verse & Gameplay Developer will take primary responsibility for Refuelled’s underlying gameplay systems.
This includes areas such as:
-
Reusable and modular gameplay components, such as race systems, checkpoints, lap tracking and race state management.
-
Vehicle tuning and vehicle/player interactions.
-
Leaderboards and multiplayer gameplay systems.
-
Different gameplay modes.
-
Systems for alternate routes, shortcuts and other track-specific mechanics.
-
Integrating gameplay systems with tracks and UI.
-
Debugging and improving existing gameplay systems where necessary.
Requirements
You should be comfortable with programming, ideally in Verse. However, I will also consider developers with strong programming foundations who are confident they can pick up Verse quickly.
You should be able to work independently and design systems on your own.
Previous UEFN or Verse experience is preferred, but not strictly required if you can demonstrate strong programming ability.
You must also be 18 or older, or turn 18 before December 2026, so you are able to join the UEFN team when the project is published.
Environment & Track Designer
The Environment & Track Designer will take primary responsibility for designing, building and polishing the tracks and environments used throughout Refuelled.
This role is not just environment art; tracks need to both look good and work well as racing environments, so you should be comfortable considering gameplay alongside visual design (you won’t be expected to get involved with designing the actual mechanics, just to be considerate of them).
This includes areas such as:
-
Designing new tracks and track layouts.
-
Environment and set design.
-
Terrain, scenery and surrounding areas.
-
Lighting and atmosphere.
-
Designing shortcuts, alternate routes, etc.
-
Making tracks easy to follow at high speeds.
-
Working with the Gameplay Developer to integrate checkpoints and gameplay systems.
Requirements
You should have experience with environment or level design, preferably within UEFN or Unreal Engine or a similar engine.
Previous experience designing racing environments is preferred, but not required.
Examples of previous environments, maps, tracks or other level-design work would be preferred when applying.
You must also be 18 or older, or turn 18 before December 2026, so you are able to join the UEFN team when the project is published.
UI Developer
The UI Developer will take primary responsibility for Refuelled’s user interface and other technical presentation systems.
This includes areas such as:
-
The in-race HUD.
-
Lap and checkpoint information.
-
Player position displays.
-
Race timers.
-
Speed and other vehicle information where appropriate.
-
Menus and navigation.
-
Results screens.
-
Leaderboard interfaces.
-
Progression-related interfaces.
-
Spectating UI.
-
UI animations and other technical presentation features.
-
Connecting UI elements to Verse and live game state.
-
Helping create a consistent visual style across Refuelled’s interfaces.
There may also be opportunities to work on related technical presentation features such as VFX, music, transitions, or other systems - depending on your experience.
Requirements
You should be comfortable creating and implementing functional UI.
Experience with UMG and Verse is preferred.
You should also be comfortable working closely with the Gameplay Developer, as many UI systems will depend on data from the underlying gameplay systems.
Examples of previous UI would be preferred.
You must also be 18 or older, or turn 18 before December 2026, so you are able to join the UEFN team when the project is published.
Applying
If you are interested, send a DM to @CroakyJake on Discord. You should include the following details:
-
Which role you are applying for.
-
Your timezone (so I can arrange team discussions when people will be available).
-
Any relevant experience and/or examples of previous work where possible.
-
Roughly how available you expect to be between now and December.
-
Whether you would be interested in remaining involved after release.
