Help! my control rig is collapsing in viewport

I created a rig of my own character while following Evans Bohl’s “How to Animate Characters in UE5”. The controls work fine to move the character, but when I save, all the bones, and geometry collapses down to the origin, in a jagged shape, and I can’t see any of my controls anymore. Then when I compile, it fixes itself. However when I try to drag the rig into the world to begin animating, it stays in its collapsed/broken form.
Any ideas what is causing this?
