Harry Potter Philosopher's Stone PS1 Walkthrough Part 2: Rescuing Hedwig & Flying Class - YouTube video of the game im talking about
I’m just gonna go ahead here and say what must be said.
This is a bad idea.
I know it’s tempting to make stuff based on what you like and while I’d personally think it would be awesome, it’s just not a good thing going for copyrighted material.
It’s happened too many times before; people putting down time and effort making great looking copies and fan works of stuff just to be shut down.
My advise is to ask whomever owns the rights to Harry Potter (I’m guessing Rowling herself) and to the publishers of the original game (which is EA, so good luck with that) if you can make this game. You’re most likely to be declined, but it’s the best that you can do.
Just check it out before you waste time on this project.
I’m going to agree with SageHunter.
But let me propose a question for you: why do you want to remake this specific game? Is there something special about the gameplay that you want to replicate? Is there some flaw to it that you feel needs updating?
Rather than remake the whole game, I would suggest you remake a portion of it. Like, just the core gameplay, maybe a level or two, just for the purpose of getting used to how Unreal handles. This way you won’t be starting from scratch, but will have a basic idea of what you want to achieve with the engine. Then, when you’re done, you’ll be able to use what you’ve learned to make a game that’s completely original.
Tried it once. Failed miserably. If you’re going to spend time developing, might as well spend time on your own IP. Good Luck.
Remember, if you infringe on other people’s copywrites or IPs, especially if you rip assets from the original work, it doesn’t matter if you are looking to make money or not.
Nintendo recently shut down a Mario 64 remake done in Unity, even though it was free and only remade the first level (Bob-om Battlefield).
Companies have good reasons for doing this. Mostly, it’s to ensure that their brand remains in their control, and isn’t diluted or twisted by dozens of free clones, imitators and “remakes” being produced by people they don’t know or trust.
As TechLord said, don’t waste your time making something that will be shut down in the future, if you liked that game for a particular reason, create your own IP that borrows ideas from the original game (not “Barry Trotter and the Psychologists Rock” though). Definitely DO NOT use assets ripped from another game.
Exactly. Would’ve been fun to play a modern made version of mario 64. Another one is “TerrorDrome The Game”, that apparently had plenty of cease and desist orders filed up but the game is still online to download and you know what… it’s actually a pretty fun fan game but business is business I’m afraid
These are the reasons I haven’t done anymore work on my GoldenEye project. I just work on my own creations now.
One thing I will say though… If your just going to play this by yourself and not share the game or show gameplay on youtube then I don’t see why you can’t just privately make it for your own amusement.
I love the enthusiasm that you have for this project. Sometimes it things like this that get people into this industry, and be willing to give it a shot. As others have mentioned, you are going to have to deal with Trademark and Copyright issues. However, if this is something just for yourself, that will never be played or used by other people, the odds of them coming after you is nill. If it ever gets out to the public, then you are screwed. May not be worth doing.
Using the sound files would be a bad idea. I know folks in the entertainment area, and the ones most likely to file paperwork and stop you are the musicians and their producers.
SageHunter is correct. Find out who owns the copyright of the game, and contact them. Let them know what you are trying to do. Even with very low odds, it is possible that they may give you the greenlight with very specific conditions. The most common is that you can’t charge for it. This usually discourages most hobbyists.
Follow Cinebeast’s advice. Try to do a portion of it to learn, then do your own thing. It will be easier on you in the long run to own it all yourself.
Id realy like to help you with a Harry Potter game But instead of remakeing it i Would prefer to make a whole New Story.
