Happy Holidays + 2 Free Tools for UE5

Hello Everyone,

First off, I’d like to wish everyone a happy holidays. I’d also like to share my gratitude to the wonderful people in this community that take their time to help answer questions and offer advice. We’re all learning together and it makes a huge difference having an engaged and supportive community. I’ve personally benefitted and learned a lot from the kindness of others, so thank you.

I take a lot from this community, but where I can I try to give back. I’ve created two tools for UE5 this year to try and give back to the community. They are completely free to use in your personal or commercial projects, there is no upsell or paid version, I do not want money for them. I made them for me and as I’ve benefitted from the kindness of this community I wanted to do my part to contribute to it. If you haven’t come across either of these tools and think they’ll be useful, feel free to download them (or not).

Here are links and a brief descriptions:

DECAL CHAMP
(Decal Champ (FREE Decal Tool for UE5))

I made Decal Champ as I wanted to make my scenes look richer but it’s sometimes hard and/or expensive to buy different decals. And having variations of decals often requires using a different texture or material each time. So, I created Decal Champ which uses standard textures to create pretty much any decal type you can dream up. Brick patches, puddles, dirt, stains, blood etc. etc. It’s performant as it just takes an Albedo and Normal map although can be extended to take more maps if you choose (99% of the time I don’t think it’s worth it). There are a ton of options and tutorial videos. But, it’s pretty plug and play and has become quite popular with this community.

TEXTURE PAINT CHAMP
(Texture Paint Champ (FREE Texture Painting Tool for Unreal Engine 5))

I made Texture Paint Champ to easily update Textures directly in Unreal Engine 5 by painting directly onto static meshes. As a UE5 hobbiest I often use 3rd party assets, but sometimes they’re not quite the look I want. Maybe I have a nice, clean furniture pack, but I want it to look more dirty, worn or apocalyptic. Substance Painter is awesome, but I know it can be expensive for some and I didn’t personally like Adobe Mixer (I often found the results didn’t look right when imported into the engine and didn’t like the UI etc.). I thought it would be cool to easily update textures directly in the engine without making more complex and expensive materials, so Texture Paint Champ was born. It’s not trying to be as advanced as something like substance painter, but I like to think it has some cool features and, well, it’s completely free and lightweight. There are tutorial videos that explain how everything works and this one actually got featured on the GameFromScratch channel (HERE).

Anyway, feel free to try these tools out and see if they are helpful to you. In any case, I wish you all happy holidays and an awesome 2024!
