Hanging/Freezing when opening context menu (Mac Studio - Apple Silicon)

Hi All,

I’ve seen similar issues here but with Windows and AMD Graphics cards. However I experience the same with my Mac Studio.

Whenever I right click, or access context menus, usually when I need to drill into another sub menu with a >, then UE5 freezes. I get the usual multicolour Apple beach ball and sometimes after 5-10 minutes I can continue, but most times I have to Force Quit and relaunch.

Anyone have any similar issues using UE5 on Mac’s.

Mac details:
Mac Studio 2023
Apple M2 Max
32GB Memory
Sonoma 14.2.1
Unreal Engine 5.3.2

Cheers
Paul

I actually have lots of issues with UE5. Some people using it without any issues, which is expected. But I guess there are people with UE5 issues more than we reliaze. Most of the time I cannot even use it so I don’t. I’m doing all the work with UE4. Unreal 5 keeps crashing while almost doing anything. I also tried different machines and clean projects. I believe UE5 suppose to be in Beta or Preview right now.

I’ve been having these exact problems (Editor freezing when editing values in blueprint nodes, entering right click menus and other issues) for months and you are the only other person I have found having them. I’ve tried old projects, new projects, verifying, reinstalling the editor, reinstalling the OS and unfortunately it still happens. I don’t suppose you’ve had any luck with finding out what causes it?

Same here UE5.3 on Mac Studio M1 Ultra, 64GB, Sonoma 14.4

Still happening on 5.4 preview.

Still no luck. It’s just so random. Sometimes I can go a few hours without any issues, and then virtually everytime I right click. Same as you, reinstalled Unreal etc.

I’ve submitted bug reports, posted about it here and on discord, but haven’t gotten anywhere. I had virtually no issues at all using Unreal on Mac everyday for years until this started happening. If 5.4 doesn’t fix this I’m not really sure what else to do.

Same issue on 5.4, but I found a workaround, if you dock the content browser, once is freezes clicking on the separate content browser works again…

Same here. 5.4.3 freeze all the time when I edit blueprints. Easy to reproduce when you drag a connection and just drop it in the middle not able to connect. Usually at that point it freezed. Very annoying. Also may free for another reasons…

Same here… many crashes… always on the context menu’s. Taking one CPU core to 100% load and freezes. Intel macOS 15.0 / RX5800 / UE 5.4.4.

Epic Games fix this, it’s unworkable.

WORKAROUND: Drag out the Content Drawer panel to your second monitor, as soon as it freezes start clicking the floating Content Drawer and keep hitting escape unit it unlocks! Works every time!
