I’m very new to UE4, still watching tutorials to learn the basics.
So, I just got myself a new graphic card: EVGA GTX-980 SC and already installed it, so everything seems to run perfect but I didn’t have a chance to actually test it because I’m not a gamer, I’m an animator… so I will try render in Blender but I’m more curious about real-time with UE4.
Since I’m a UE4 noob, I’m wondering…
1 - Do I need to change something on the preferences / options or something in order to “tell” UE4 to use my GPU or it should automatically recognize it and use it by default?
2 - Is there any extra tweak I need to do inside UE4 in order to get the best results using the GPU?
3 - What is a good and easy way to test if everything runs good in UE4, see basic information such as **FPS **while it’s running?
I hope that my machine is good enough for working with UE4:
1.) You should be able to disable your processor’s integrated graphics either through BIOS or through Nvidia control panel. This way, the only GPU UE4 will recognize is your 980.
2.) Doubt it. GTX 980 is a beast card. If you need to, though, you can look under settings in the main toolbar, then engine scalability settings, and tweak individual settings there.
3.) In the default layout in the editor, in the viewport, top left, there is a down arrow. Click that and you will see a checkbox for “show fps.”
About #1 - Is there a way inside UE4 to show that it’s using the GTX-980, just before I’ll go to the Bios I’m wondering.
I’ll probably disable the built-in Intel’s graphic but I’m still curious if there is something like that.
I have two EVGA 980 SC’s in my rig. Though UE4 only uses one, it handles it like a champ without any settings changed.
If you want to check FPS there’s a few ways: First is going to Editor Preferences -> Misc -> Check the FPS counter/ Mem usage. In the PIE window you can click the settigns dropdown at the top left and check the “Show FPS” and in game you can open the console and enter “stat fps”
InfectedFPS: Can you recommend me on a UE4 demo to grab so I can run and see if everything works smooth or if it’s laggy, skipping frames or anything.
maybe a cinematic so I can just click “PLAY” since I don’t know much about UE4 yet.
I haven’t really tried much of the demos outside of Shooter Game. You can probably try the Elemental Demo, though. I think that might give you a good idea
Sooo… I’ve downloaded the Elemental Demo, took a while to create the project, lunched it… and I saw the snow and everything.
Since I don’t know much about UE4 yet, I clicked the “Play” button and it played on the screen, took a few seconds… then it start to play the scene inside the editor’s window.
OK… so I stopped it, and tried to click on the little Arrow next to the Play, to see if I can run it in a new window and I did.
Again, took a while to load maps and stuff… and than it played (but it didn’t show me the FPS stats on the new window).
Once the all scene finished played (it looked AMAZING BTW!) but I noticed a few drop frames here and there… I guess my computer and GTX can’t hold such project… I’m kind of sad about it because I can’t do another upgrade for now.
ANYWAYS!
After I clicked ESC nothing happened, so I clicked ALT + F4 to close that other window, and get back to UE4 Editor, now what I see is a weird black screen and lots of lines and stuff… when I click PLAY it plays with as it is… all black and weird lines like in the screenshot I’ve attached.
Is this a familiar thing happened to anybody? is there a way to fix it? Did I do something wrong?
GTX 980… can’t handle the scene?
I have no idea how to solve it (without Re-Launch), so please tell me if this thing is a bug or something I can do about it so it won’t happen to me on every single project.
Thanks ahead!
Black screen after Playing the scene… possible to fix it on settings or something?
