GTX 960, GTX 970, R9 390, GTX 980 - Price vs performance

Hi,

On the fence with whether to get one of the following:
GTX 960 2gb / 4gb
GTX 970 4gb (3.5gb due to video ram issue…)
R9 390 8gb
GTX 980 4gb / 8gb

If I choose the GTX960 now the spare cash will be used to get a GTX980 later, when the exchange rate is better.

Due to the current exchange rate, I’m paying quite a bit extra over US prices.

As a function 960 2gb is half price of 970 and R9 390 and 980 4gb is about 3 times 960.
ie:
960 = 1x 960
970 = 2x 960
980 = 3x 960

Thanks.

You should mention that the R9 390 has 8GB of RAM and the GTX 970 does not have 4GB but 3.5 GB :slight_smile:

Done, I was going to post about the 3.5GB in a separate thread, which is why I ended up not finishing this post properly.

The last .5GBs of the 4 are supposedly much slower.

I can’t say much about the latest AMD cards as I haven’t kept up that much but the 970 Is really great bang for the buck regardless of the 0.5GB slower memory. The step up from a 970 to 980 in performance is not big and the price difference is quite big. I’d say if you don’t plan on buying another one any time soon, go with 970 or 980 TI if you can afford it. If you plan on going with a better card when the exchange rate is lower, don’t buy anything until you do, buying a 960 now and upgrading to a 980 later would be a huge waste of money and you could have gotten a 980 TI for the same price instead. Depending on where you are I would guess it’s the extra applied tax (Usually about 25%) that you’re paying over the US price rather than an exchange rate difference (unless you’re buying from the US).

TL: DR

Buy 960 if that’s all you can afford any time soon.
Buy 970 if you want bang for the buck.
Buy 980 TI if you have the money to spend.

Don’t buy 960 now and upgrade just a bit later, that’s a huge waste of money.

Agreed, I have the 960, and it does seem like quite a waste that I bought it now that I will be upgrading.
