Grass (WIP)

Hi guys been working on some grass lately, this is grass i have made in 3DS not speedtree, i am just using the speedtree node in my material to get some color differences.

But im having a problem with the tips of the grass being to dark.

Any tips or advise would be amazing thanks! also if any one knows how i would go about adding a wind effect that would be really helpful thanks guys.

nice one you got there.

just a realy simple tip: height variation is realy good to cover that it is just one mesh.

Do you created the Texture from a photo or do you rendered her from a highpoly model?

Thanks for the reply mate made some changes to the model and added some height variation in the vegetation tool as well

I am using a texture from GameTextures

yeah, that looks more natural, in my opinion :D.

now you maybe need some improvements on the shadows.
Have a look into AO and Normalmaps.

Thanks mate yeah im using a normal and a roughness map on it atm but ill look in to AO

Looks really good, but I personally would add a little bit more green to the texture -> looks a little bit too white (could be because of the specular or roughness) :slight_smile:

How many tris do you use for that grass?

Thanks so much man, really helpful stuff. At the moment 350 but im going to go back redo it i think, as well as make some LODs, very much a WIP atm.

Hey guys small update. I have gotten the poly count down to 220 on LOD 0 and i have also improved the colors as well as added wind effect and color variation just need to sort out the LODs and the lower res textures for the LODs. still have a problem of black tips of the grass not sure why?

It’s difficult to say why those black tips appear, but ->

-check your alpha channel
-make sure that they dont appear in your texture
-delete the normal map and see what happens -> when it’s because of that, make sure to set the normal map to “normal” and that you flip the green channel (in the texture properties)
-use the new shading mode from 4.7 :slight_smile:

Thanks for the response and all the help i have removed my normal map as that was making the tips black (Not sure why), i have also made alot of changes to the texture to get a nicer effect and im quite happy with the results

Sorry for all the question but would you say 220 triangles is a good amount for the LOD 0?

Looks really good!
It’s acceptable, but you can still decrease it -> e.g for my grass I use around 6 tris :slight_smile:
