Getting started - preparations

Hi all,

Maybe some known topic but couldn’t find the exact answers to my questions. I don’t exactly know where to start, so I’ll just type whatever comes in my mind.
I’ve been following alround basic tutorials and read some topics within the unreal documentation. I’ve a little knowledge of scripting, 3d modeling, photoshop and the basics of UE4. I’ve also an idea of what to make but I just don’t know where to start.

I’d like to make a basic ‘graveyard’ with some graves, a fence, a shed within etc. something like that. My questions about this are the following:

Am i supposed to create the terrain in UE4?
Am i supposed to create serveral graves, the fence and the shef in a 3d modeling program and import it into UE4?
Are the geometry meshes in UE4 just to make a ‘prototype’ of how big the graveyard will be and to define the size of for example a grave?

I just don’t know where to start, probably some lack of knowledge but I actually can’t find a ‘step by step’ instruction which tools you should use for which ‘things’.

Thanks in advance :slight_smile:

Greetings.

  1. either create the terrain in the ue4, or use tools like world machine
  2. yes, create several graves in your 3d program and then import them (you could also just always swap the texture -> but then you wont have so much variation)
  3. they are just used for prototyping -> after that you replace everything with meshes :slight_smile:

meshes/skeletal meshes -> a 3d program
textures -> photoshop
materials -> ue4
terrain -> ue4 or world machine

Thank you very much for the clear answers.

Is 3ds a recommended program to use for modeling for UE4? Better said, which 3d modeling program is recommended?

It depends on your preferences (just test some of them). I personally like blender. :slight_smile:

For textures substance painter is very nice
